G31 Fieldwork to Whitley Bay this Wednesday 18th June

As part of their learning expedition: Hold back the river, students in Year 7 have been answering the guiding question “How does water shape our world?”.

In science there has been a focus on ecosystems, protecting the natural world and maintaining biodiversity.

On Wednesday this week we will be carrying out fieldwork at Whitley Bay to achieve two main objectives:

  • To be of service to our local community by carrying out a beach clean. Litter in particular plastics can have a devastating impact on the food web. Microplastics are found in the gut of many species now as their environment becomes polluted due to human activity.
    • This work is in connection with our partners for the expedition: Surfers Against Sewage. You can find more information on their website if you would like to get involved in a beach clean in our region.
  • To carry out an ecological field study in the Brierdene area to get an insight of the species that live there, the interdependence within that ecosystem and the importance of freshwater and saltwater to the species that populate the area.

The forecast is warm with sunny spells and minimal risk of showers. Students will be travelling with staff by foot and metro. The fieldwork will take place during the regular school day hours. In addition to their regular kit students will therefore need:

  • Sun cream
  • A hat
  • A large water bottle (or two smaller water bottles)
  • Comfortable walking shoes or trainers
  • A packed lunch – students that usually have free school meals can be provided one by the school.
