All G33 year 7 students will be carrying out fieldwork at the location of the former Whitburn Colliery and Marsden Village near to Souter Lighthouse in South Tyneside. They will also be doing geology studies in Marsden Bay. This fieldwork will build on work that students have done in the immersion to their new learning expedition – which has a focus on the industrialisation and subsequent de-industrialisation of our region.
G33 Class 1 will be going on Monday 14th September
G33 Class 2 will be going on Tuesday 15th September
Your child should now be able to tell you which class they are in, but please do ask your child’s crew leader if you are uncertain.
Kit
Students will need:
- to wear clothes that will keep them warm and dry – lots of layers.
- a waterproof coat is essential as the forecast is for sunny spells with showers.
- wellies or old trainers – part of the fieldwork will involve studying the rocks in Marsden Bay which is a sandy beach.
- a packed lunch – if your child usually has free school meals, a packed lunch can be provided by the school.
- their school bag with regular school kit list inside including iPad. Most bags are not waterproof so we suggest putting kit inside a plastic bag inside the school bag.
Early start and slightly later finish time.
We are travelling to the site by school minibus. We will complete a thorough kit check before leaving school – this means that students need to be in school for 8.00am for the day of their fieldwork. This will allow us to take advantage of favourable tide times and get the most from the day.
We expect to return to school a little later than the normal end of the school day, with students finishing at 4.00pm but will update our website should there be any delays due to traffic.
